Now that I am done with my NH48, I’m expanding my horizons. I have no list. I am listless. So, I’m bouncing around, trying to figure out what my next BHAG is. (Big, hairy, AUDACIOUS goal… hi, business school). Perhaps: 52 With A View. I whined and wheedled until my pal Rachel agreed to climb a hill. Me, Rach, ze pooch Lulu, and the noble Prius-steed headed north.
The first thing I noticed in the parking lot were the bugs. I was judging a ridiculous looking mosquito net contraption over the entrance hut, but once I hopped out of the miniPri I understood. Bugs. Many bugs. But, we’re tough cookies, so into the woods we went.
Luckily, the bugs weren’t a huge issue once we got moving. But, the grade kind of was. One thing I have learned in my hiking years is that miles are liars. And this mile was very up. Much up. Straight up. Rude.
Rachel comforting Lulu. JK, Lulu crushes mountains for breakfast.
Eventually we spotted a fire tower, and crested the summit. We heard the faint tsssss of a mechanical noise. Firetower communications? An illegal drone? Nope. Just some grown ass men playing with toy monster trucks.
This is right up there with “Woman Carrying Pet Rabbit Up Cliff” on my “Weird Shit I’ve Seen in the Woods” list.
We watched the Mountain Top Monster Jam® and ate some snacks. I tried to coax Lulu up the fire tower but she was not vibing.
I honestly felt like this 3 mile hike was harder than last year’s 19 mile trek to Owl’s Head, but maybe I am just squishy and feeble from the pandemic winter. I don’t know. Either way, the views were nice, and we still had plenty of time to get ready for a unicorn-themed rager that evening, so I call it a success.
